Amongst customers, especially larger businesses, there is strong latent demand for the types of advanced data and multimedia services envisaged for UMTS. This demand, though, will only be realised if 3G networks can deliver significant improvements over existing GSM or GPRS networks in terms of speed, latency, reliability, ease of use and cost-effectiveness. While W-CDMA undoubtedly offers a big increase in high quality voice capacity, the extent to which it can deliver the required capabilities for advanced data services has yet to be fully proven and there is concern that operators will struggle to introduce the range of applications and services needed to meet the needs of business customers.
