This paper explores the security risks surrounding mobile devices and their enabling technologies, the security available to the devices themselves, the transmission medium used by them and the networks that the devices connect to. GPRS security functionality is equivalent to the existing GSM security. Authentication and encryption setting procedures are based on the same algorithms, keys and criteria as in GSM systems. GPRS provides identity confidentiality to make it difficult to identify the user.
