Properly configuring, analyzing and managing IP routing configurations between Autonomous Systems in the Internet is a very complex task, as it requires collaboration from all peers to avoid "accidents" - which can either erroneously block the exchange of IP packets between end systems, or allow the use of paths which should not be available for some reasons (technical, security, administrative or commercial). This paper provides some background describing the problem space, the history, and the current state of technical discussions regarding RPSLng (the next generation of RPSL), which is expected to support IPV6 unicast and maybe also multicast for both IPv4- and IPv6-based Internets, and IP-in-IP tunnels.
