In October 2001, NTT DoCoMo launched the world first 3G commercial network, "FOMA - Freedom for Multimedia Access". At their side, and every step of the way, was Gemplus, supplying the world first USIM cards for this momentous achievement. The original card was single mode - i.e. 3G only, as the 2G DoCoMo network, PDC, did not require the use of a SIM and therefore there was no question of roaming between their two networks. DoCoMo has since launched a new card in the range, also delivered by Gemplus, called WorldWing. Users can securely make purchases through the I-mode interface and benefit from mobile banking.
