As IP version 6 (IPv6) gains acceptance, there will be a period of transition during which hosts using IP version 4 (IPv4) will wish to establish sessions with hosts using IPv6. This paper outlines the steps that must be taken to make such sessions possible. The paper reports on the construction of an experimental system to verify the requirements, outlines the solution to some application-layer problems, and speculate on the solution to the rest of the problems identified.
