SURFnet is an advanced-research broadband network infrastructure and organization in the Netherlands that is funded by member institutions and grants. SURFnet has embraced IPv6 as a pathway to future high-powered Internet applications that take advantage of the increased addressing space and other features. The SURFnet5 team chose Cisco based on the strength of IP technology in Cisco IOS Software running in Cisco routers, switches, and other network products. The installation of Cisco 12000 Series routers enabled SURFnet to implement IPv4 and IPv6 in a dual-stack deployment, letting member institutions run one or both protocols simultaneously.
