NTL Broadcast (and its public-service predecessor) has been the sole transmission provider for UK commercial terrestrial television since its inception in 1955. Across the world, governments are trying to encourage the use of public transport, to alleviate traffic congestion and its attendant pollution. Public transport operators, responding to this, are starting to fit TV screens to their vehicles to improve the traveller's experience. TANDBERG Television engineers were asked to bring their expertise of COFDM and DVB to the trial. From a broadcaster's base in Oxford, an MPEG-2 transport stream comprising two live services was distributed to the transmitter sites via an NTL microwave network, installed specifically for a trial.
