There are a number of ways in which cyber intruders can invade systems and cause damage. Service interruption, virus transmission, denial-of-service attack - regardless of the offence being perpetrated, the potential for harm can be significant. Not only can millions of dollars in business be lost, but the reputations of companies doing business on the Internet can be severely damaged as well. In fact, many business victims of cyber crime fail to report attacks for fear of exposing their security vulnerabilities and damaging their credibility with clients. As hackers increase in number, their prey becomes more varied and their attacks disturbingly bold. Even government computer systems around the world find themselves targeted by cyber attackers.
