Southern Company, a super-regional energy company with more than 35,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, supplies energy to a 120,000-square-mile service territory spanning most of Georgia and Alabama, southeastern Mississippi, and the panhandle region of Florida. To consult with construction managers about computer aided design (CAD) models of its plants, engineers had to either make costly site visits or communicate with faxes, which were inefficient and did not allow real-time collaboration. The company's Engineering Construction Services division needed a tool that would allow very large CAD models to be viewed over the internet using standard desktop computers. Southern Company chose Oracle CADView-3D. Oracle CADView-3D allows engineers and construction crews to mark up models, see part lists and attributes, and section models online.
