The U.S. Navy, a branch of the U.S. armed forces, is headquartered at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Gathering weather data and getting it quickly to commanders, both in the theater of operations and at headquarters, has evolved from horse-riding messengers to meteorologists with desktop PCs merging sensor data with modeling software. Working with R.L. Phillips Group, an IT consultancy and services firm based in Carlsbad, California, the U.S. Navy's Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC) organization began the pilot project to demonstrate the viability of a handheld weather collection and reporting application operating over a secure wireless network. The benefits were more-efficient methods, faster access and cost savings.
