The United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service is responsible for national forests all across the United States. Despite a sophisticated Land Mobile Radio (LMR) system within each forest; each forest's LMR system was essentially an island of communication - providing communications only within a forest. Hard-wiring of analog circuits to specific dispatch centers further exacerbated the problem by preventing dispatchers and end-users from communicating outside their immediate domain. Working closely with Network Integration & Consulting Services and Cisco Systems, the Forest Service deployed a WAVE based Land Mobile Radio over IP solution using NICS' MARC LMR system. The benefits were shared dispatch/backup dispatch, flight following and strategic investment.
