The United States Coast Guard needed to be able to conduct real-time conversations with the crews of the ships and aircraft involved in the operations. A further requirement was that personnel needed secure access to these radio channels from any location they found themselves at - be it at a Coast Guard base, at home, or on the road. Radio systems across the 13th District ranging from Oregon to the Canadian border are connected to the IP infrastructure using standard Cisco router equipment making use of E&M (Ear & Mouth) interfaces to carry audio signals between the routers and radios. Key benefits of the WAVE installation were realized on a number of fronts including cost reductions, improved communications, enhanced security, personnel empowerment, and a more reliable communications infrastructure.
