The WiMAX Forum is an industry group formed to promote and certify radio systems based on the recently completed IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access standard. Equipment complying with the standard and meeting the interoperability requirements will be certified as "WiMAX" by the WiMAX Forum. As envisioned by proponents, WiMAX point-to-multipoint radio systems will initially compete with other fixed broadband access systems, such as DSL and cable, and ultimately with mobile wireless data systems.
