Query notifications are a powerful new feature, built in to SQL Server 2005, usable from ADO.NET 2.0 and from ASP.NET 2.0 directly. Although the ADO.NET feature (SqlNotificationRequest and SqlDependency) only works against a SQL Server 2005 database, ASP.NET makes the feature "backwards-available" through an alternate mechanism that uses polling. This paper explains how to use the new notification technologies in ADO.NET 2.0 and SQL Server 2005 to handle ad-hoc data refreshes.
