Two major types of tape drive technologies include linear and helical. Linear technology, specifically digital linear tape (DLT), has become the predominant choice. DLT provides reliability, capacity, and performance, and has earned a reputation as a reliable tape drive technology. In the event of complete system failure and resulting data loss, having a tape based disaster recovery plan may separate the e-storage survivors from the casualties. This paper describes criteria for developing a tape solution and outlines some features of the PowerVault 110T DLT1 Tape Drive.
