The tragic events of September 11, 2001 dramatically impacted the U.S. Coast Guard's mission focus redirecting additional resources to expanded Homeland Security missions. This spurred the need for U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Portland to maximize the efficiency of traditional missions, including the inspection of the over 480 foreign tank ships, freight ships and cruise ships that call on Maine and New Hampshire ports annually. The Canadian/US Port State Control (CANUSPORT) Team launched a pilot project in September 2002 to partner with counterparts from Transport Canada to eliminate redundant vessel inspection activities by accepting the result of inspections conducted in Canada.
