The world's largest ticketing contract was awarded to TranSys, a consortium of EDS, Cubic, ICL and WS Atkins by London Transport in 1998. The TranSys consortium, led by EDS and Cubic, has selected among others, Philips' contactless chip technology for use in London's Oyster smartcard project, which began the first phase of roll-out by issuing Philips MIFARE-equipped cards to 80,000 staff. Fujitsu are also expected to be supplying IC's for this project based on their FRAM. As the system uses RFID, passengers no longer need to stop and insert tickets into gates thereby increasing passenger throughput and reducing congestion at peak travel periods.
