This report examines transit safety and security at the federal and local levels. In particular, the report describes challenges in securing mass transit systems, steps transit agencies have taken to enhance safety and security, and the federal role in transit safety and security. In addition, it surveyed a random sample of all transit agencies throughout the nation that are eligible to receive federal urbanized area formula funds to obtain additional information on safety and security issues.
