For RFID tags to be able to replace barcodes, the technology has to be one hundred times cheaper, or at around 5 cents to a dollar. New tags will need to be developed with a memory of only 96 bits and read-only with frequency range of just a few metres. The usefulness of the technology warrants that the costs will come down to more realistic levels. It happened in the case of barcodes, and there is no reason to believe that it will not happen with RFID. For the moment, RFID is just the right technology for retail showrooms for premium products, the likes of jewellery and watches for instance.
