A successful Sarbox compliance initiative requires extensive communication among company departments, specifically between accounting, finance, treasury, and information technology. Companies must also pay careful attention to critical gaps in their financial systems, including third-party interfaces, unsecured hooks into back-office systems, and disparate databases. Sarbox and Section 404 compliance is a long-term proposition. It will continue long after the first attestation. Therefore, the approach to managing and enforcing policy and compliance procedures should be viewed from a strategic objective. This can result in hard-dollar savings, as auditors become more comfortable with processes and spend less time performing control audit tasks.
