Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) is the leading center in the United Kingdom for research on barley, potatoes and soft-fruit crops, as well as temperate, subtropical and tropical crops. Traffic bottlenecks and poor performance on its aging, coax-based Thin Ethernet network infrastructure were impeding the productivity of the Information Technology (IT) team and other network users. SCRI's new infrastructure is based on a star network design that incorporates a fiber-optic backbone to provide high-capacity connections between the various buildings and a central Cisco switch. Category 6 standard cabling is installed within each building and connected to the backbone via workgroup switches.
