On May 27, 2004, EMC announced the newest member of the CLARiiON family of products, the AX100, broadening its target market to reach further into the SMB market, as well as the remote offices and smaller divisions of larger companies. The AX100 is a 2U, external disk array that supports Fibre Channel storage area network (FC-SAN), network-attached storage (NAS), and direct-attached implementation options. EMC intends to offer iSCSI support in 3Q04. This paper analyzes EMC's new CLARiiON AX100, considers the strategic implications of bringing a product at this price point to market, and assesses EMC's decision to sell this primarily through partners.
