The performance and scalability of an application server directly impacts the amount of hardware and software that must be purchased to run an application. Costs are further impacted by the recurring maintenance and support costs of those products over the lifetime of the application, and can dramatically overshadow the initial purchase price. While other factors such as ease of use, reliability, standards support and the extensibility of the server also impact the total cost, risk and other success factors of a project, this paper will focus specifically on analyzing the performance and scale of BEA WebLogic and IBM WebSphere and their impact on the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the systems they run.
