The RIKEN Advanced Center for Computing and Communication provides centralized support for all computer systems and network infrastructure at their seven affiliated institutes throughout Japan. RIKEN has placed a major emphasis on life science research for the future, and thus it is critical to introduce high-performance systems that are suitable for this field. RIKEN has been studying clusters composed of Intel-based servers. In 2001, they completed a cluster composed of 64 machines with Intel Pentium 4 processors running at 1.70 GHz, and achieved performance equivalent to a supercomputer with 32 processors in CFD. By utilizing grid technology, RIKEN provides a remote-operating environment and Web-based access for easy usability.
