WAP is intentionally bearer-independent. This makes it compatible with GSM, Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), and Personal Communication Service (PCS) technologies. WAP is also compatible with multiple types of bearer services including short message service (SMS), circuit-switched cellular data (CSD), and cellular digital packet data (CDPD), as well as GPRS. Hence, the connection between GPRS and WAP is really market-oriented, not technology- or standards-oriented.
