IBM zSeries mainframe and iSeries mid-range servers have important roles to play as resources and clients in the grid computing domain. Excess capacity from their traditional processing can safely be automatically provided to Linux partitions, making it feasible for them to become grid resources. This paper examines the similarities and differences between grid computing and modernized classic computing on zSeries and iSeries servers, including high availability, security delegation, data flow computing, Services Oriented Architecture, maturity, intense shared I/O, concurrency and workload management.
