The task of sizing servers for file system protocols differs dramatically for each protocol. The NFS protocol enjoys a robust performance specification called SPEC SFS that details system performance and configurations with a specification that is adhered to by all major server vendors. The CIFS (Common Internet File System) protocol does not have an associated performance specification, through SPEC or anyone else. This paper provides basic guidelines for determining HP 9000 Server system models and configurations for CIFS/9000 installations.
