By executing multiple threads on the same processor at the same time, Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) enables concurrent execution of multiple instruction streams to help optimize processor utilization. AIX 5L v5.3 and POWER5 processors on i5 and p5 eServer systems fully automate SMT without requiring any application modifications or tuning. This paper provides an overview of the IBM POWER5 SMT implementation, how IBM AIX 5L v5.3 enables SMT and how DB2 Universal Database Enterprise Server Edition exploits this technology for higher performance.
