Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is the largest municipally owned utility in the United States delivering utility services to residential and business customers. The challenge was to leverage its communications network and rights-of-way to provide robust, low-cost SONET and Ethernet optical transport services to carriers, Internet service providers, and enterprises. They implemented a high-capacity, metro-area optical network built with Nortel Networks Optical Enterprise solutions, providing resilient, high-speed services for use by LA city departments, area businesses, competitive carriers, and Internet service providers.
