Legal experts are predicting a rapid increase in the number of lawsuits filed as a result of security breaches, regardless of whether the institution wittingly or unwittingly facilitated (whether as initiator or middleman) cyberattacks. Colleges not wanting to find themselves on the wrong end a liability suit claiming damages due to invasion of privacy or identity theft and possible future harm need to take steps now. It is incumbent upon them to protect their, and their students', personal information and intellectual property against all attacks, whether they be worm outbreaks, DDoS attacks, or security and privacy breaches from keyloggers, spyware, and adware.
