Technology has advanced significantly in the years since the SONET standards (GR-253, GR-1230, etc.) were initially developed. Many of the limitations of SONET today are based on the technological capabilities that were available at the time the standards were created. Fixed overhead use, inflexible cross-connect capabilities, and limited processor speed have all contributed to inflexible network architectures that are having difficulty fulfilling the requirements of today's networks. SONET is the gold standard for highly reliable network architectures because it was designed with carrier requirements in mind. SONET upgrades must therefore maintain the benefits of the SONET architecture.
