SDH circuits, particularly at capacities of 155Mb/s (STM-1) or higher, are often a preferred means of implementing private interconnect circuits between large ISPs to address mission-critical and/or high-volume peering requirements. Due to the important nature of these interconnections, there is usually a need to ensure they are "protected", so that the service is not disrupted by failure of the underlying fibre or equipment. This paper describes how to use switched Gigabit Ethernet (via XchangePoint's MetroXP vConnect 1000, MetroXP 1000, MetroVPH and MetroVPX products) to offer a more cost-effective and rapidly deployable protection path for one or more unprotected SDH circuits.
