With today's increasing emphasis on delivering Ethernet services into metro networks, Ethernet technology is emerging as a superior method for bringing services to customers. But until recently, efforts in developing Ethernet technology had fallen far short of meeting stringent carrier requirements. What has changed in recent years is the addition of several missing elements that have kept Ethernet from becoming a viable Synchronous Optical NETwork (SONET) / Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) replacement. These ingredients, including carrier-class (SONET/SDH) resiliency, advanced traffic management capability, optical integration, legacy migration support, and Time Division Multiplex (TDM) services, have recently been added, creating a new, advanced technology: Optical Ethernet. This white paper focuses on one of these ingredients: SONET/SDH-like resiliency.
