With the turn of the millennium and the continued evolution to the Information Age, terms like Just-in-Time, 24/7, and Always-On have become ubiquitous. Customers expect their product or service to be delivered just in time for consumption, and if they're open 24/7, they expect, in fact demand, that their service is always on. For suppliers to provide this level of service to their customers, they need a way to monitor the entire supply path. Data services are, by nature, already transmitting information, and therefore overlaying diagnostics is relatively straightforward. For the utility industry, data collection must become automated, since an on-site human meter-reader could never collect data as fast as it is required.
