The choice of modulation technique for Wireless Local Loop is an important factor in the efficiency and economics of broadband wireless access systems. Currently, some equipment manufacturers are choosing Othogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing modulation for their products and are claiming that this gives their systems a fundamental advantage over other modulation schemes, in particular Single Carrier modulation. Othogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing modulation techniques are not new to the field of radio communication and, as with any engineering design choice, have their related advantages and disadvantages. This paper explains why Cambridge Broadband has chosen to use Single Carrier modulation techniques for the VectaStar 3500 broadband fixed wireless access system.
