Consider the University of Hawaii, where a sophisticated student information system (SIS) has consolidated data for simplified reporting and e-mail has practically replaced the telephone as the communication channel of choice for many of its 45,000 students and 5,000 faculty and staff members. Both the SIS as well as campus e-mail applications run on the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) platform. The University has enjoyed a successful track record using best-of-breed technology from Sun, so it turned to the Sun ONE platform to support its newest applications.
