Historically, the telephone penetration rates in central and eastern Asian countries have been low and much of the equipment is outdated. However, the governments of these countries have recognized the importance of telecommunications as a means to boost their economies and improve their citizens’ standards of life. Consequently, the monopolistic state operators have been, or will soon be privatized and the markets opened up to competition. Nowhere is this more evident than in the mobile sector, which is rapidly overhauling the fixed network as the preferred means of communication in these countries, as elsewhere. Today the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) is the dominant mobile system in the region. Alcatel has a significant share of the market with its Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) enabled equipment, and is working with operators to plan their evolution to 3G, and to convince users of the benefits that more advanced services will offer.
