Reference data is growing at an exponential rate and until recently users did not have many options for placing their data on cost-effective media, with good performance, based on the data's value, critical business needs, age, frequency of use, and application use. A user's choices were primarily high-performance disk, tape, and optical media. This paper describes using Near-Online storage, low-cost Fibre Attached Technology Adapted (FATA) disk drives, in the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA), to supplement the high-performance disks and complement the use of tape and optical storage resources.
