One popular service that carriers provide to business customers is a managed VPN that makes use of a public key infrastructure (PKI). Such security services ensure users' identity by issuing each employee or device within the customer organization a digital certificate. A PKI enables users to securely and privately exchange data (such as electronic funds or other sensitive information) through the use of a public and a private cryptographic key pair obtained and shared through a trusted authority. The digital certificate identifies an individual (or an organization) by verifying their certificate information with a special server that stores and, when necessary, revokes the certificates.
