Buffer overflow attacks have become more and more frequent with the advent of the Internet. The public exposure of network servers and the increased popularity of the Internet, have increased dramatically attempts to hijack publicly available servers. The advent and the increased popularity of Open Source also, while increasing the stability and the architecture of existing software through cooperation, gave hackers the key to spot vulnerabilities and to exactly calculate frame addresses. Many famous packages like bind, wu_ftp, apache and sendmail, just to keep the list short, have been subject of buffer overflow vulnerabilities.
