PCs, Internet appliances, PDAs, smart cellular phones and almost any other information appliance all need to access large amounts of data on disks. Almost all systems have a local disk. A local disk is physically integral to its system. Other types of are removable disks, which may or may not be plugged into the system at any given time Additionally, there are also distributed disks, which are physically located on a remote server and are connected to the system through a LAN, WAN or the Internet. Local flash disks, that is, local disks based on flash memory, are very convenient and typically used where the need for local storage does not exceed a few dozen megabytes.
