Storage devices, which optimize the concept of file sharing across the network have come to be known as Network Attached Storage (NAS). NAS solutions utilize the mature Ethernet IP network technology of the LAN. Data is sent to and from NAS devices over the LAN using TCP/IP. The IBM Windows Powered NAS offers customers a comparatively low total cost of ownership when compared to the proprietary NAS offerings that are in the market today.
