This white paper explains the importance of the AMD Opteron processor in the future. The AMD Opteron processor has greater configurability due to its ability to run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications simultaneously. This is not true of the current Intel platforms. Under the control of a 64-bit OS, existing 32-bit applications can run on AMD Opteron as they do today - without recompiling applications and without an emulation layer, so performance is not degraded. From a cost perspective, ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) can save money by supporting their applications on the AMD Opteron chip.
