If you have a Portal Schema that is not located in an OracleAS Metadata Repository, you will not be able to take advantage of some of the new management services for Oracle Application Server 10g (9.0.4). Instead, you must perform some manual configuration steps. These limitations, however, do not affect the runtime of the portal, they only affect the manner in which you administer and change the configuration of the portal.
