Chip multithreading (CMT) combines chip multiprocessing (CMP) and hardware multithreading (MT). In order to make the most of CMT systems when they become available, Sun has developed the Sam CMT simulator toolkit. A Sam simulation is usable as an interactive system, running at about 100Kips on a 1.2GHz UltraSPARC III and about 200Kips on a 1.8GHz AMD Opteron 244. This paper introduces the terms CMP, MT, and CMT.
