Salomon Smith Barney's Investment Banking Division provides financial advisory and capital-raising services to corporations and governments, and the firm also has a strong presence in institutional sales and trading, municipal finance, and research. To enhance its financial consultants' abilities to serve current clients and elicit future business, Smith Barney sought to provide them with critical information about clients and their accounts, plus arm them with a wide array of mechanisms to, effectively monitor performance, handle client correspondence, and stay abreast of market activity. Using the Microsoft Visual StudioT development system tools, particularly Microsoft Visual Basic and Microsoft Visual C++ development systems, the firm designed an application that marries centralized 3270 mainframe information with real-time, local updates at each branch's server.
