This paper discusses Cisco Inline Power (ILP) and the IEEE 802.3af standard with respect to delivery of delivery of Power over Ethernet, the differences and the considerations in terms of power management. With the advent of Cisco IP Telephony, Cisco Systems innovated mechanisms whereby Cisco Catalyst multiservice switches could deliver Power over Ethernet (PoE) using existing copper cabling to IP phones.
