The Challenge for Sony Pictures Imageworks was to improve performance and reliability of servers and databases that manage internal production workflows. They worked with Intel Solution Services to replace RISC-based UNIX servers with 600 dual Intel Xeon processor-based Dell PowerEdge 2650 servers in a clustered configuration to process artistic work into high-resolution images. Sony also deployed Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server operating system and Oracle9i Real Application Clusters (RAC), attached with Dell PowerVault 220S Ultra SCSI disk drive subsystem to each server. The benefits were faster processing times speed artistic production; clustered configuration enabled seamless failover and Oracle software on Intel processor-based Dell servers provided excellent price/performance ratio.
