Peak-to-average ratio (PAR) of a signal determines the required backoff from the Power Amplifier (PA) compression point to keep clipping and hence spectral regrowth to within acceptable limits such that the maximum required power can be transmitted with the least backoff. A high PAR puts stringent requirements on the PA and reduces the efficiency in that a higher input backoff is needed to ensure that the signal peaks do not experience significant distortion due to the PA non-linearity. This paper analyzes and compares the PAR of the forward link (downlink) of a IS-856 (cdma2000 1xEV) system with that of IS-95 system.
