The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) has been around now for nearly 15 years, and in that time it has evolved from handbooks for the U.K. government to be the accepted worldwide de facto standard for IT service management. The author uses the word evolved here deliberately and advisedly, because the real strength of ITIL is in its adoption and adaptation to the range of environments in which it has been successfully applied. This white paper introduces readers to some of the basic ITIL concepts and relationships and it is undoubtedly healthy for the industry that product and service providers recognize the pivotal nature of ITIL by reinforcing the roles it can play in helping their customers to deliver quality IT services.
